Amami Park is a viewing type academic tourist facility. The park is home to "Amami no Sato," which introduces the nature, history, culture and industry of Amami in an easy-to-understand manner, and the Tanaka Isson Memorial Museum of Art, a Japanese painter who painted Amami. In the park, you can see Takakura that were used to store grain on Amami Oshima.

Keihan, the soul food of Amami, is a dish loved by everyone from the elderly to children. Naze

名瀬

Naze, located about an hour's drive from the airport, is a port town and the center of Amami Oshima. It is a must-visit place for tourists as there are many accommodations and it is often the departure point for one-day tours. The "Yango Street" in Yanigawa River has a wide variety of bars, so it is fun to go out for a drink.

Honohoshi Beach, located at the southern tip of Amami Oshima Island, is a rather unusual beach in that it is not a sandy beach but a beach filled with round stones. Mt. Yuwan park

湯湾岳公園

Mt. Yuwan, the highest mountain in Amami, is 694 meters above sea level and is located between Ugan Village and Yamato Village, with two climbing routes. The route on the Uken Village side takes about an hour on foot and allows visitors to climb slowly while viewing the subtropical vegetation unique to Amami. Since it has been revered as a sacred mountain since ancient times, there are halls and shrines at the top of the mountain.

Kaiun Sake Brewery

開運酒造

The brown sugar shochu "Rento" is the representative product of Kaiun Sake Brewery. It is made by mixing brown sugar made from sugar cane and rice malt and fermenting them. Some people think it is a sweet liquor from the ingredients. However, it is a distilled sake that does not contain any sugar and is a crisp, dry sake. It still retains the sweet aroma and flavor of brown sugar. During the factory tour, you can try tasting shochu, and depending on the season, you can also enjoy cutting sugar cane, tasting millet juice and brown sugar.

Sights Information

Kinsakubaru Primeval Forest

Kinsakubaru is a primeval forest that is home to many species of flora and fauna that are unique to Amami Oshima. Overhanging trees allow in slivers of sunlight, creating a mystical atmosphere that feels as though you have stepped inside a fantasy story. Visitors must be accompanied by a certified guide, but this is actually for the best, as they can explain in depth all the wonders and hidden areas that would otherwise be lost on those who are unaware of their existences.

Kakeroma Island

It is reached by a 20-minute boat ride from Koniya Port at the southern tip of Amami Oshima Island. Recommended if you want to feel even more at one with the sea and nature! There are no big resort hotels or supermarkets, but pensions and guest houses. The blue ocean where you can swim like at Plavate Beach, and the villages with coral stone walls still retain the appearance of the islands from long ago.

Heart Rock

It is a heart-shaped tide pool that can be seen only at low tide. It is located about 15 minutes drive from Amami Airport. The beautiful heart can be seen for about an hour before and after the low tide. It is rocky and slippery, so please be careful.

Ferry

You can also cross to the island by boat from the port in downtown Kagoshima! The boat departs from Kagoshima City in the evening and arrives at Amami Oshima Island in the early morning. The boat trip is also recommended for those who want to spend a relaxing time gazing at the stars above the sea and the sunrise at dawn.

Habu

Habu, also known as poisonous snakes and said to be more numerous than the population of Amami, are not likely to be encountered during normal sightseeing, but they are said to be nocturnal and often appear after rain, so be careful! You can also buy souvenirs such as hub liquor and accessories made from hub skins and bones.
