This mausoleum was built according to the will of Date Masamune. 仙台城跡

Sendai Castle is also known as Aoba Castle. Aobayama, 130 meters above sea level, has cliffs to the east and south, and the Hirose River flows under the cliffs. Osaki Hachimanugu Shrine

大崎八幡宮

Osaki Hachimangu Shrine, founded by Date Masamune in 1607, has been and continues to be popular for its various blessings. The vermilion torii gate, the wide stone steps, and the towering cedar groves along the approach give a sense of 400 years of history and a solemn atmosphere.
The Donto Festival, in which New Year's decorations are burned in the shrine precincts to pray for good health and family safety, attracts about 100,000 people.

Jozenji-dori Street

定禅寺通

Jozenji-dori is a street lined with zelkova trees that stretches about 700 meters in the center of Sendai. The middle of the street is a walkway, dotted with benches and sculptures, making it a place for local people to relax.In the fall, a street jazz festival is held, and in the winter, the zelkova trees are illuminated in a pageant of light that is a yearly tradition. The Sendai Mediatheque, which houses a library and gallery, and many cafes and stores make for an enjoyable stroll.

Zuiganji Temple

瑞巌寺

The official name of Zuiganji Temple is Matsushima Seiryu-zan Zuigan Enpuku Zen Temple. Originally built in the early 9th century as a temple of the Tendai sect, it was converted to a temple of the Rinzai sect in the Kamakura period. It is famous as a temple associated with Date Masamune. The gorgeous fusuma paintings and Ranma carvings by the Kano school are a must-see!

Entsuin

円通院

The main attraction of Entsuuin is its garden! The garden, which is said to have been created by Enshu Kobori, one of the most famous gardeners of the Edo period, is centered around the Shinji Pond. It is also famous as a moss temple. The illuminated autumn leaves attract many visitors with their fantastic splendor. The temple is also strongly influenced by Western culture, and you can find roses and playing card patterns on the walls.

Godaido

五大堂

Godaido, the symbol of Matsushima, is called after the statue of Godai Myoo that is enshrined there. It is a small island floating near the sightseeing boat terminal, about an 8 min. walk from Matsushima Kaigan Station, and can be reached by crossing the "Sukashibashi bridge". The sculptures of the twelve animal signs are arranged according to the direction.

仙台のお祭り

The Sendai Tanabata Festival, held in August, is one of the three major festivals in Tohoku and has a history of over 400 years! The city of Sendai is gorgeously decorated with Tanabata decorations. The Aoba Festival, which heralds spring, features Yamahoko floats set up in the arcades in the center of Sendai, and the Sparrow Dance is performed. In autumn, the Street Jazz Festival is held, and in winter, the zelkova trees are lit up in the Sendai Pageant of Light.

Hot Spring in Sendai

足を伸ばして温泉へ

Miyagi Prefecture is also rich in hot spring resorts. Sakunami Onsen and Akiu Onsen located in Sendai City, is a 30-minute drive from the center of the city and has long been a favorite as a a day trip hot spring. Naruko Onsen, one of the three famous hot springs in Oshu, is famous for its kokeshi dolls, and there are many kokeshi doll workshops in the hot spring town.

Sights Information

Fukuura Island

Fukuurashima Island is located in Matsushima, and you walk across a 252-meter-long vermilion-painted bridge. On the island, there is Benten-do and a teahouse. In autumn, the green of the pine trees and the autumn leaves are very beautiful. Fukuura Island's famous "Daruma-mikuji" is a wooden Daruma doll with a fortune inside.

Hiraizumi

Hiraizumi flourished as the capital of the Oshu Fujiwara clan during the Heian period. You can visit Chuson-ji Temple with its Konjikido (Golden Hall), Motsu-ji Temple with its Pure Land Garden that expresses the world of Buddha, and other important cultural properties with an elegant atmosphere. It is recommended that you rent a bicycle or take a tour bus!

Kokeshi Dolls

Kokeshi dolls, which are said to have originated as souvenirs from hot spring resorts in Tohoku, have become popular as good luck charms to ward off evil spirits and as toys for children, and have spread throughout Japan. They have different shapes and expressions depending on the region where they are made. Please try to find your favorite kokeshi.

Zao

The Zao mountain range, which straddles Miyagi and Yamagata prefectures, offers mountain roads for driving from spring to autumn, and skiing and hot springs in winter. The emerald green caldera lake "Ogama", fresh green leaves, autumn leaves, and tree ice in winter are just a few of the natural beauties you can enjoy.

Toyoma

In the Meiji era (1868-1912), the prefectural government was located here, and the area flourished as a political and economic center. The streets are still full of samurai residences from the Edo period and Western-style architecture from the early modern period. You can tour inside the buildings, and some samurai residences have been turned into teahouses, so you can enjoy a nostalgic stroll.
