本福寺 水御堂

It is a Shingon Buddhist temple dating from the late Heian period. The reconstructed building is a modern concrete structure designed by architect Tadao Ando. The pond fountain, which is both roof and ground, is a large lotus pond that is brightly colored during the lotus season in June.

Izabagu Jingu Shrine


The Kojiki, which describes the beginning of the nation of Japan, states that Awaji Island was first created. The Izanagi Jingu Shrine is the oldest shrine in Japan, where Izanagi and Izanami, the gods who created Awaji Island, are enshrined. The giant torii gate, the dignified and stately hall of worship, the sacred pond, and the 900-year-old camphor tree are all surrounded by a sacred atmosphere.

Ruins of Red Brick Factory


During the Meiji and Taisho periods, the Sumoto area was built one after another with the spinning factories of Kanebo, contributing to the modernization of Japan. The red brick exterior of the building is used as a select store featuring Awaji's local products, a restaurant, and as an event space.

Sumoto Castle


Sumoto Castle was the base of this area from the Warring States Period to the Edo Period. Particularly distinctive are the climbing stone walls that lead from the foot of the mountain to the slopes of the summit, which are valuable, rare, and well-preserved, and are worth seeing.

Awaji Puppet Theater


At its peak in the mid-Edo period, there were more than 40 puppet theaters on Awaji Island, performing puppet joruri to people from all over Japan. After World War II, volunteers formed the Awaji Ningyoza to preserve this tradition. 4 performances are given each day, so be sure to watch the joruri play out in front of you!

Road Station Uzushio

うずの丘 大鳴門橋記念館

兵庫県立公園 あわじ花さじき

Takenaka Carpentry Tools Museum


Takenaka Carpentry Tools Museum is the only museum in Japan specializing in carpentry tools. Exhibits include a planer, chisels, and saws, and show how "woodworking" works without the use of nails. Visitors can learn by actually touching them. There is also a full-scale model of the pillars and braid of the Golden Hall of Toshodaiji Temple and a structural model of a tea ceremony room, which will surely make future visits to shrines and temples even more enjoyable!

Kobe Kitano Ijin-Gai

Awaji Island Monkey Center

This is a place where you can see more than 300 wild Japanese monkeys. The monkeys on Awaji Island are very gentle. They return to the mountains in the evening, so if you visit early in the day, you will be able to observe them carefully.
